Choosing the best filling technology for an application is dependent on a variety of factors, including the product properties, the size of the container to be filled, and available budget. Filling Systems operate using primarily two different methods: Volumetric (filling by volume) or Gravimetric (filling by weight).
In a Volumetric Filling System, a self-priming cylinder, equipped with an interior piston, draws in material from a feed reservoir. The materials are prescribed a stroke length required for filling the volume of the packaging container. Then, the volume of the cylinder is forced into the product can or pail by the lowering piston.
In Gravimetric Filling Systems, the empty product container is placed beneath a filling nozzle and the packaging is filled to a precise weight. The system’s controls close the material feed valve once the precise weight has been met.
Due to their simplicity, volumetric filling lines typically cost less than gravimetric systems. However, each application may require evaluation and balancing of other factors as well. For instance, if a product has a tendency to foam or the filling process creates bubbles, volumetric filling usually is not recommended. If the volume to be filled is greater than five gallons, the gravimetric filling is normally used.
Gemini by PRI™ filling lines are available to work with Aqueous Chemistries or products containing flammable or combustible solvents. Systems are available for filling paints, coatings, inks, adhesives, primers and cleaning chemicals. High viscosity materials can also be accommodated, such as putties, muds or trowelable caulks, as well as granulated products such as wall plaster.
We can engineer filling lines that incorporate automated process controls, conveying systems, and container capping and closure systems to meet the needs of virtually every application.
